The present is used to speak about a general action, a habbit.

With words indicating a repetition : her zaman - always, her defa - each time, genellikle - usually

How to form the present

The verb’s root is obtained after removing -mak/-mek.

To form the stem of the present tense, the stem is

  • the verb’s root + r if the verb’s root finish with a vowel

    • for exemple, okumak ==> okur

  • the verb’s root + ir I ar I er I ur I ür based on the last vowel of the root.

  • Add the ending following the table below

For the very large majority of turkish verbs:

  • If last root’s vowel is A, the stem = root + -ar : yapmak -> yapar

  • If last root’s vowel is E , the stem = root + -ir or -er : gelmek => gelir ; sevmek => sever

  • If last root’s vowel is I , the stem = root + -ir or -er: bilmek => bilir; gitmek => gider

  • If last root’s vowel is ı , the stem = root + -ır : çalışmak => çalışır

  • If last root’s vowel is O, U, the stem = root + -ur : olmak -> olur

  • If last root’s vowel is Ö, Ü, the stem = root + -ür : görmek -> görür

The negative present form

How to form the negative form:

The verb’s root is obtained after removing -mak/-mek.

  • if the last root’s vowel is a hard vowel : a, ı, o, u then the ending should be of type ‘A’

    • mam/mazsın/maz/mayız/mazsınız/mazlar

  • if the last root’s vowel is a soft vowel : e, i, ö, ü then the ending should be of type ‘E’

On root + maz root + mez
